While visiting the death bed of an old friend, I witnessed the tradition of bringing cakes and casseroles and flowers. It struck me how much these rituals had transformed from baking to buying. A nephew came with a large flat box of Dunkin Donuts. I opened it and photographed the offering. Later I painted the new ritual. The new tradition. Bringing what is recognized. The familiar....

This Photograph is a shout out to the BEAUTY of POLAROID, the design as well as the concept. The Rainbow OneStep - IDENTICAL TWINS photograph was inspired by the mix between my favorite things ... a sort of MASH-UP with the label maker of the 70's and the Polaroid Camera of the same era....
The Big Boy is an ORIGINAL POLAROID taken with the POLAROID MINIPORTRAIT 452 CAMERA. The camera was designed to produce instant multiple images, for Passports and ID's. By covering all the lenses except for one at a time, I am able to utilize the multiple lenses, shooting four images on one Polaroid. Growing up, The Big Boy was the iconic mascot of my favorite restaurant, also named Bob's Big Boy. Razor blades are my paintbrushes and candy wrappers are my paints. Utilizing precisely cut candy wrappers and their iconic logos, this 'pop art' still life is rendered in diverse and colorful forms. The wrappers and logos are manipulated to give color, form, movement and whimsy to the subject, creating both a carnal delight and an exciting visual effect. The physical wrappers attempt to comment on the subjects they are portraying. The result is a nuanced iconography that is both visually stimulating and appealing.
