Worship The Brand - Classic - Paintings

: This painting juxtaposes a contemporary icon with prehistoric cave art, inviting comparisons of changing environments and corresponding rites of passage. I paint portraits of concrete blocks and cinder block walls in acrylic on silk. I incorporate brushes, rubbing, and spray paint to transform the luxurious fabric into concrete. No computer, printing, silk screen, image transfer, or photographic techniques are used.

: As a Peace Corps volunteer science teacher in Western Samoa, Haan taught himself to paint while living in a thatched hut without running water or electricity. He painted portraits of villagers in oil on canvas. After teaching and painting abroad for a decade in Samoa, Iran, and Indonesia, Haan returned to America and began a career as a wildlife artist.

His first painting of a duck placed second in the Federal Duck Stamp competition (the winner won $2,000,000.) He won several state competitions and was exhibited in numerous museums around the world. In 1985, NY’s Ducks Unlimited named Nolan Haan Artist of the Year.

Longing for a career as a contemporary painter, Haan began a series of portraits of cinder block walls in 1989. Painted in acrylic on silk, Haan’s artworks have won numerous awards. They have been shown in many museum exhibitions and have been purchased by collectors worldwide. In 2010, Haan was awarded the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual Arts. His painting “Monday” was recently included in the permanent collection of the Frost Art Museum, Miami. He is currently on exhibit in the Boca Museum of Art.
