Ai Weiwei @Large

Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has created a thought-provoking, beautifully detailed, and politically engaged exhibition of 176 portraits all made out of LEGOs!

Ai Weiwei 1

Created on-site at the notorious Bay Area federal prison turned national park, Weiwei’s masterpiece, titled @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz depicts historical figures that have been exiled or imprisoned because of their political beliefs. The large carpets of LEGO blocks display pixelated portraits of famous and infamous personalities from Nelson Mandela to Edward Snowden, and include many lesser-known political prisoners as well.

Ai Weiwei 2

@Large was assembled with the help of 80 volunteers and used more than 1.2 million LEGO bricks. Alcatraz, a former prison, is the ideal site for the piece allowing visitors to reflect on their own freedom and human rights. The exhibition is on view through April 15, 2015.
