Enemies' Embrace: Superman and Lex Luthor
16x20 inch painting depicting Superman in conflict with his most well-known enemy Lex Luthor. Luthor is as intelligent as Superman is powerful, but what he has in the powers of his mind he lacks in his heart. Luthor is actually closer to the first version of Superman that Siegel and Shuster created in their "Reign of the Superman" comic. That version of the character had advanced powers of the mind and was bald, and his blind ambition to use power against others matched Luthor's. Lex Luthor is a different interpretation of what "Superman" means; his superior ability marks him as such. However, Luthor is powerful at the expense of his humanity, which is deeply flawed; he is by no means completelty evil, and can even be used wonderfully as an antihero. But his purposes are entirely self-serving, which conflicts with Superman's selflessness. In these two characters, we as human beings see two paths for the use of our own power: one is driven by vainglory and the pursuit of self-interest whereas the other only wields his strength when in service to others.
